"Serve as Good Shepherds": Apostolic Nuncio at Inaugural Mass of the 36th CCBI Plenary Assembly

Bhubaneswar, January 28, 2025: The 36th Plenary Assembly of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) commenced with a solemn inaugural Mass at XIM University, where Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal, His Excellency Most Rev. Leopold Girelli, urged the bishops to "serve as good shepherds” and emphasized the significance of opening one’s heart to the grace of the Holy Spirit.

He underscored the importance of invoking the Holy Spirit for guidance, wisdom, and renewal. He stated, "Through the Spirit, we receive wisdom to make decisions, knowledge to face challenges, and love to serve others." Reflecting on the Gospel, he highlighted the inclusive nature of God’s kingdom, which transcends backgrounds, ethnicity and social status.

The Apostolic Nuncio further emphasized synodality as a call for greater communion and unity through faith and journeying together. He encouraged everyone to open their hearts to the transforming grace of the Holy Spirit and reminded the faithful to be genuine followers of Christ.

The celebration concluded with the Apostolic Nuncio’s blessing and a call for bishops to draw inspiration from St. Thomas Aquinas in their mission. He shared a heartfelt message, saying, "My presence among you today is to strengthen the bond between the Holy Father and the Church in India.” On his behalf, I impart my blessing to all of you, your ministry, and your dioceses, so that you may faithfully serve as good shepherds to your people."

Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, President of the CCBI and the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), warmly greeted the Apostolic Nuncio and emphasized the significance of the assembly's theme, "Discerning Synodal Pathways for Mission." He urged the gathering to pray for the assembly's fruitfulness.

The grand Mass, attended by bishops, priests, nuns, and laity, was followed by the inaugural session, marking a significant step in the Church's mission.
