Rome, December 9, 2024: The Catacombs of San Callisto in Rome will serve as a central pilgrimage destination during the Holy Year, set to begin on 24 December 2024. The Salesian San Callisto Community, responsible for the catacomb complex, has extended an invitation to the entire Salesian Family worldwide to visit this sacred site during the Jubilee Year. The catacombs, which are entrusted to the Salesian Congregation, offer a profound testament to Christian hope, reflecting early Christian beliefs in resurrection and eternal life.
Pope Francis highlighted the significance of the catacombs as pilgrimage routes in his address to the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology on 17 May 2024. He emphasized that the Jubilee theme, "Pilgrims of hope," is beautifully embodied in the catacombs. These ancient burial sites, filled with Christian symbols and depictions, narrate the story of hope through life beyond death, liberation from danger and God's eternal promise through Christ. The catacombs’ epitaphs, depicting lush plants, flowers, doves and sheep, echo the Christian message of life and resurrection.
The Pope further urged the faithful to visit the tombs of martyrs within the catacombs, whose courageous witness continues to inspire and invite prayer for persecuted Christians around the world.
