Pope to Rome Diocese: ‘Heal the city’s wounds, strengthen solidarity’

Vatican city, October 28, 2024: Pope Francis addressed the faithful of the Diocese of Rome at an assembly in the Basilica of St. John Lateran on October 25, urging them to take collective action to heal the city’s deep social wounds and enhance solidarity. Under the theme "Mending the Tear, Beyond Inequalities," the assembly was attended by civil and parish authorities, including Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, key religious leaders, and representatives from diverse faith communities. The Pope emphasized the urgency of addressing poverty and inequality, asking the faithful to become active participants in bridging societal divisions and reaching out to the vulnerable.

The gathering commenced with an invocation to the Holy Spirit, followed by Cardinal-elect Baldassarre Reina’s introduction. The chant “Make us one” resounded throughout the basilica, symbolizing the Church’s aim to move beyond inertia and work toward unity within the fractured social fabric of Rome. Prominent figures such as Andrea Riccardi of the Community of Sant’Egidio, sociologist Giuseppe De Rita and religious representatives from various Christian denominations, as well as the Islamic community, underscored the city’s shared aspiration for justice and fraternity.

Following scriptural readings, Pope Francis listened to testimonies reflecting the daily struggles faced by residents in Rome’s outskirts. Journalist Marco Damilano warned of the dangers a divided city faces, echoing the need for a compassionate response to societal challenges. Giustino Trincia, Director of Caritas Rome, presented a report summarizing efforts within the diocese, symbolically entrusting it to city officials and emphasizing that addressing these challenges requires both responsibility and action.

Pope Francis responded by asking if the community could recognize Christ’s face in those suffering around them. He appealed to the faithful to move beyond statistics, acknowledging those struggling with poverty, homelessness, addiction and mental anguish as brothers and sisters. He highlighted poverty as an ecclesial priority, encouraging the diocese to embody God’s tenderness by standing with the poor.

The Pope also called on the faithful to be “daring in charity” and engage in dialogue with institutions, fostering measurable actions that tackle inequalities. As the Jubilee approaches, he urged everyone to bring “concrete works of hope” to life, invoking the spirit of previous Rome-based leaders like Don Luigi Di Liegro, who championed active volunteer work.
