Beirut, 3 December 2025 — Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass in Beirut’s Martyrs’ Square during his apostolic visit to Lebanon, urging believers and leaders alike to “disarm hearts” by choosing peace, forgiveness and reconciliation in a nation riven by hardship, division and recent conflict.
Addressing thousands gathered in the historic square, the Pope said that a disarmed heart — open to compassion — is essential for healing fractured communities and achieving lasting peace. He emphasised that true peace begins within individuals and extends outward to families, society and the wider world.
The Mass highlighted the role of faith in fostering unity, particularly in places marked by political instability and social tension, reinforcing the message that peace is both a gift to be received and a commitment to be lived.
Pope Leo’s appeal comes amid broader efforts to support inter-religious dialogue and reconciliation in Lebanon, where diverse communities have long shared a complex history of coexistence and aspiration for harmony.
