Pope Leo Calls for Global Peace and Climate Action During Visit to Vatican Radio Hub

Vatican City, June 20, 2025 : At the close of his visit to the Santa Maria di Galeria Transmission Centre, Pope Leo XIV issued a heartfelt appeal for peace in an interview with Italy’s Tg1 news, underscoring the enduring mission of Vatican Radio in a world torn by conflict.

Just beyond the gates of the historic broadcasting facility — which has powered Vatican Radio’s global mission for over 90 years — Pope Leo paused to speak with veteran Vatican correspondent Ignazio Ingrao. The Pope took the moment to highlight the tragic toll of ongoing violence across the globe.

“I want to renew this appeal for peace. We must do everything possible to avoid the use of weapons,” Pope Leo said firmly. Instead, he advocated for dialogue “through diplomatic means” and stressed the need for united action to “find solutions” to the tragedy of “so many innocent people who are dying.”

Vatican Radio: A Lifeline of Hope

Pope Leo also took the opportunity to reflect on Vatican Radio’s legacy and its future. The shortwave transmission centre, founded in 1957 by Pope Pius XII, has not only been a beacon of news and faith but is now embracing new roles, including efforts to address climate change.

According to a note from the Vatican Press Office, during the visit Pope Leo inquired about the operation of the site’s antennas, its broadcasting functions, and its digital disaster recovery system.

“I wasn’t familiar with this centre nor with the Vatican Radio antennas,” he admitted, recalling how the station had served as a lifeline during his years as a missionary in Latin America. Armed with just a small radio, he would often tune in to Vatican Radio’s shortwave broadcasts “even in the mountains where there was no other access.”

His experiences were similar in Africa, where he served as a leader of the Augustinian order. “At night,” he recalled, “I would always find the news — a good word from this truly important service that is Vatican Radio.”

A Solar-Powered Future

The Santa Maria di Galeria Centre is now advancing with the vision laid out by Pope Francis. A year ago, the Holy Father issued the motu proprio Fratello Sole, directing that the site be equipped with an agrivoltaic (solar panel) system to help the Vatican achieve energy self-sufficiency.

For Pope Leo, this initiative symbolises “a wonderful opportunity” and reflects “a commitment from the Church” to lead by example. “We are all aware of the effects of climate change,” he said, adding that we must care for the planet and all of creation, “as Pope Francis has taught so clearly.”
