Pope Francis Reflects on the Star of Epiphany, encouraging the faithful to be one

Vatican, January 7, 2025: On Monday, January 6, Pope Francis delivered a profound reflection on the Gospel reading for the Solemnity of the Epiphany, focusing on the star that guided the Magi to the newborn Jesus. Speaking at St. Peter’s Basilica, the Holy Father explained the three characteristics of the star—its brightness, universality, and guidance—while urging all believers to embody Christ’s love through faith, compassion, and fraternity.

The Pope described the star as “bright,” symbolizing God’s love made manifest through Jesus’ sacrifice. He emphasized that Christians are called to reflect this divine light by living with faith and tenderness, without relying on extraordinary means. “We can guide others to Christ by making our hearts bright with faith, our gazes generous in welcome, and our gestures full of gentleness,” he remarked.

Highlighting the star’s universality, Pope Francis noted that it was “visible to all,” drawing people from every walk of life to Christ. He encouraged the faithful to reject discrimination and exclusion, instead fostering a culture of welcome, encounter, and integration. “God calls us to replace the narrow spaces of fear with open spaces of sharing and life,” the Pope said, underscoring the need for inclusive communities.

Finally, the Pope reflected on the star’s role in guiding pilgrims, tying it to the Jubilee of Hope and the invitation to embark on spiritual journeys. He urged the faithful to free their hearts from selfishness and seek Christ in humility and unity. “By walking together in generosity and humility, we encounter Christ and pay Him homage,” he concluded.
