Pope Francis Eager to Visit India, Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão Urges Government to Expedite Process

Panjim, November 29, 2024: Pope Francis is eager to visit India, according to Cardinal Felipe Neri Ferrao, Archbishop of Goa and Daman. Speaking at a reception for Vatican delegates hosted by Governor P. S. Sreedharan Pillai at Raj Bhavan on November 27, the Cardinal requested the Governor to urge the Government of India to issue an official invitation to the pontiff. The event highlighted the enduring relationship between India and the Vatican, emphasizing shared values of unity and respect.


He praised Goa’s legacy of communal harmony and the Church’s contributions to nation-building, particularly in education, healthcare and social services.


Governor Pillai acknowledged the historic connection between Raj Bhavan and Rome, marking the first visit of a nine-member Vatican delegation to Goa. He shared that Pope Francis had sent spiritual gifts, including a Franciscan Cross, a portrait of Mother Mary and two rosaries blessed by the Pope. Quoting a Sanskrit verse, “May good thoughts come to us from all directions,” he underscored the shared ideals of charity and service.


Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, the third highest-ranking official in the Catholic Church, emphasized the importance of dialogue and communication to strengthen ties among communities and countries. He lauded the collaborative efforts between the Church and the government for the Exposition of St. Francis Xavier’s relics, which is expected to draw eight million visitors this year.


Archbishop George Jacob Koovakad, Cardinal-elect, reflected on Pope Francis’s deep connection with India and Asia, noting their significance for the future of the Church and the world. The Vatican delegation expressed gratitude for the hospitality extended and the shared commitment to unity.


The Governor presented the guests with ceremonial lamps, Holy Crosses and copies of the Bhagavad Gita interpreted by prominent Indian figures, symbolizing the harmonious relationship between India and the Vatican.
