Padre Pio’s Untold Story Revealed in New Documentary

A new documentary drama titled “Saint Pio of Pietrelcina: Man of Hope and Healing” premiered on EWTN on December 7 at 8 p.m. ET, providing an intimate portrayal of the beloved 20th-century saint, Padre Pio. Co-produced by EWTN and the Saint Pio Foundation, this compelling docudrama features personal testimonies from those who knew him, including actor Gary Sinise and journalist Renzo Allegri, along with never-before-seen photographs and letters that illuminate the saint's life.

The film, narrated by actor Joe Mantegna, aims to showcase Padre Pio's profound faith and humility, which have inspired countless individuals around the world. Mantegna, who also serves as an executive producer, expressed that participating in the project has deepened his own faith. Luciano Lamonarca, founder and CEO of the Saint Pio Foundation, shared his personal connection to Padre Pio, revealing how his devotion intensified following a tragic loss in his family.

Lamonarca's journey began when he and his wife faced the stillbirth of their daughter, Alma, in 2010. This heartbreaking experience led them to seek solace in San Giovanni Rotondo, where they prayed with a relic of Padre Pio. Despite subsequent miscarriages, their perseverance in prayer culminated in the birth of their son Sebastian in 2015. Inspired by these events, Lamonarca established the Saint Pio Foundation in 2014 to promote awareness and devotion to Padre Pio.

The docudrama is part of a broader initiative celebrating the foundation's ten-year anniversary, which includes translating Padre Pio's letters into multiple languages and establishing chapels across the United States to house his relics. Lamonarca described the release of the film as “the cherry on the cake,” emphasizing its significance in educating viewers about Padre Pio’s life and legacy.

As audiences engage with this documentary, Lamonarca hopes they will gain a deeper understanding of Padre Pio through the eyes of those who knew him best. The film not only aims to inspire faith but also seeks to preserve the memory of a man whose impact continues to resonate with millions today.
