KCYM Koonammavu Regional Conference Demands Aid for Periyar Fish Kill Victims

Koonammavu, January 28, 2025: The Kerala Catholic Youth Movement's (KCYM) Koonammavu Regional Conference was held on 26th January 2025 at Cheriyamthuruth Our Lady of Velankanni Church, Ernakulam. During the conference, members of KCYM called on the government to urgently announce financial aid for those affected by the recent Periyar fish kill, citing violations of fundamental rights enshrined in the Indian Constitution. The event took place under the leadership of KCYM Verapoly Archdiocese President Rajeev Patric, with prominent dignitaries addressing the gathering.


The conference, inaugurated by Benny Papachan, Executive Director of the Kerala Coconut Development Board, included the reading of the Preamble of the Constitution by President Rajeev Patric. KCYM Varapuzha Archdiocese Director Fr. Raphael Shinoj Aranchery, KCYM Latin State Vice President Akshay Alex, KCYM Verapoly Archdiocese General Secretary Rose Mary K.J., Cheriyamthuruth KCYM Unit President Saleena, and Brother Nibin were among those who addressed the attendees.


The conference also saw the election of new office bearers for the Koonammavu Regional Committee. Jomy Joseph was elected as president, Saleena Robinson as secretary, Saniya Antony as vice president, and Shevin Pereira as youth counsellor.


Executive members of the KCYM Verapoly Archdiocese, including Dilma Mathew, Arun Sebastian, Ferdin Francis, and other unit office bearers, were present at the event. The conference emphasized the need for swift governmental action to support communities affected by the incident in Periyar and reaffirmed KCYM’s commitment to advocating for social justice.
