Vatican, September 21, 2024: The Vatican has confirmed that for the upcoming Jubilee 2025, the Holy Doors will be opened exclusively at the four Papal Basilicas in Rome: Saint Peter's Basilica, Saint John Lateran, Saint Mary Major, and Saint Paul Outside-the-Walls. This decision, announced by the Holy See, answers recent queries about whether Holy Doors could also be opened in cathedrals, international, and national shrines.
Pope Francis, in his Bull of Indiction Spes non confundit, emphasized that the tradition of limiting the opening of Holy Doors to these four sites will be upheld, with one exception—he plans to personally open a Holy Door in a prison, symbolizing the Church’s closeness to prisoners.
The tradition of the Jubilee Holy Door dates back to 1300, symbolizing God’s mercy and the opportunity for indulgences through penance and acts of charity. The Apostolic Penitentiary’s decree, issued in May 2024, encourages the faithful to fully engage in this sacred time by visiting the designated locations and participating in the Sacrament of Penance, adhering to the guidelines set by the Church for this spiritual journey.
