Interfaith Leaders Unite in Karnataka to Mark 60 Years of 'Nostra Aetate'

Bengaluru, October 29, 2025 – Leaders from diverse faiths came together in Bengaluru on 28 October for Bandhavya, a programme organised by the Karnataka Regional Interreligious Dialogue Commission to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Nostra Aetate, the Second Vatican Council’s historic declaration on the Church’s relationship with other religions.


Speakers from various faiths underscored the significance of interfaith dialogue, respect, and cooperation. Swami Channabasava spoke on the meaning of light across traditions, while Shri Akbar Ali urged regular interfaith gatherings to strengthen harmony. Shri Shivalinga Swamiji and Bishop Joseph Susaimanathan highlighted the importance of unity, peace, and mutual respect, drawing inspiration from Nostra Aetate’s enduring message.


Other speakers reflected on humanity’s connection to the divine and the gift of peace bestowed by God. The event also recognised long-standing contributors to interreligious harmony, including Ms. Margarete Rebello, Sr. Clarice, Shri Zafrulla, and Shri Bhatiya Singh.


Fr. Vinay Kumar, organiser and Karnataka Regional Secretary for the Interreligious Dialogue Commission, reflected on the Church’s openness and inclusivity, affirming its respect for all that is good in other faith traditions.


The gathering drew prominent figures from diverse faith traditions, reflecting the spirit of Nostra Aetate in fostering mutual respect and dialogue. Among them were Swami Shivaraudra (Beli Matta Swamiji), Swami Jayabasavananda (Vishwa Dharmapeeta, Chikkamagaluru), and Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Susaimanathan of Bangalore (Chairman, Karnataka Regional Interreligious Dialogue Commission), who stood together as symbols of shared commitment to understanding and cooperation.


Also taking part were Shri Akbar Ali (Secretary, Karnataka Jamate Islami Hind), Sr. Prema S.M.M.I, Fr. Anil Prasad (Regional Pastoral Plan Implementation Coordinator), and Shri Bhatiya Singh (Sikh community leader), each contributing perspectives from their respective traditions. Sr. Pavithra of the Brahma Kumaris further represented her community’s commitment to peace and dialogue, enriching the interfaith exchange.
