“God Alone Sustains Us”: Missionaries of Charity Hold Ground in War-Torn Gaza

Kolkata, July 30, 2025— As conflict continues to ravage the Gaza Strip, the Mother House of the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to serving the most vulnerable through its community of sisters who remain in the war-torn region.

Speaking to Catholic Connect, they shared, "The sisters continue to lovingly care for children and adults with mental and physical challenges within our compound. We have been in Gaza since 1973 and no matter how dire the situation, our mission of service will go on."

The current community in Gaza consists of three sisters, who have now restricted their outreach to within the compound due to escalating safety concerns. “Before the war, we were visiting families and looking after the poorest of the poor in the town. Now we have limited our activities within the compound,” they explained.

There were once around 30 children under their care, but in recent times, some have returned to their families. Still, the sisters remain devoted to those left behind — individuals who, in many cases, have no one else.

Speaking of what keeps them going despite the perilous situation, they shared, “God alone is sustaining the sisters and taking care of them. And because we are taking care of God’s people, we are happy and the sisters are happy to remain in Gaza and take care of those who have nobody else.”

Despite the constant shelling and worsening humanitarian crisis, the sisters have chosen not to flee. “The sisters are not frightened and want to stay with the people and comfort the people,” they affirmed.

They offered one heartfelt plea: “Please pray for the people of Gaza and for the sisters who continue to serve them with courage and love.”

Founded by St. Teresa of Kolkata, the Missionaries of Charity are known for their selfless dedication to the poorest of the poor across the world. In Gaza, their quiet presence amidst the violence stands as a powerful reminder of love, faith, and an unwavering commitment to the suffering.
