Council of Bishops in MP Condemn Arrest of Religious Sisters, Call for Justice

Bhopal, July 31, 2025: The Council of Bishops of Madhya Pradesh (CBMP) has issued a strong statement condemning the recent arrest of two Catholic religious sisters in Chhattisgarh, calling the action “unjust” and the accusations “false and baseless.” The council expressed deep anguish over the targeting of dedicated clergy and called for their immediate release.

“We express our deep anguish and unequivocal condemnation of the recent arrest of Sisters, who have been falsely implicated and detained under unjust accusations,” the CBMP said in its statement. “We are shocked and disturbed to see the way antisocial elements are targeting the dedicated people sisters and fathers who have left their homes, given up family life to raise up the lives of others.”

The bishops highlighted the lifelong service of the arrested nuns, stating, “These sisters have dedicated their lives to selfless service—educating the poor, caring for the sick, and uplifting the most marginalised in society. Their lives of faith and commitment are rooted in love, not coercion; service, not subjugation.”

Calling the arrests a violation of both human dignity and constitutional rights, the CBMP urged authorities “to uphold justice, investigate with transparency, and release the innocent without delay.”

The council also appealed to the broader public: “The CBMP stands in full solidarity with sisters. We call upon people of all faiths, media houses, civil society, and human rights organisations to raise their voices against this injustice and stand with those who have always stood for others.”

Concluding the statement, CBMP President Most Rev. Dr A.A.S. Durairaj, SVD, affirmed the council’s commitment to justice: “We demand truth. We stand for justice. Let India remain a land where truth prevails and service is honoured.”
