Tibet, January 11, 2025: A powerful earthquake struck Dingri County and the Shigatse area of Tibet on January 7, killing over 120 people, injuring more than 330, and displacing approximately 50,000 individuals. As rescue efforts continue, with over 400 people still trapped under rubble, Pope Francis expressed condolences and prayers during his January 9 address to the Diplomatic Corps at the Vatican. Hundreds of Tibetans living in exile in India and Nepal held candlelight vigils to honor the victims, while Catholic dioceses across China have launched appeals to support those affected.
In the Diocese of Beijing, all parishes have been urged to collect donations, which will be distributed by the diocese’s charitable organization, Divine Mercy. Reflecting the teachings of Christ, the appeal emphasized the Jubilee Year of Hope and Christmas season as a call to action. The Diocese of Shanghai contributed a significant donation of 500,000 yuan (66,000 euros) to relief efforts, while the Diocese of Shantou encouraged Catholic communities globally to join in offering aid.
Local organizations coordinating the response in Shanghai described the earthquake as one of the worst to hit the Himalayan region in a century. The Chinese Earthquake Networks Centre recorded the magnitude at 6.8 (7.1 on the Richter scale), with thousands of homes destroyed or severely damaged. Amid the devastation, global solidarity continues to grow, bringing hope and support to those in desperate need.
