Girls Allege Assault, Demand Justice in Durg Incident

Chattisgarh, August 3, 2025: Young women from Narayanpur district, Chhattisgarh, have come forward with disturbing allegations against activist Jyoti Sharma, following the recent incident at Durg Railway Station which led to the false arrest of two nuns from the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate (ASMI). The girls, who were travelling with the nuns, have accused Sharma and her associates of physical assault, threats of sexual violence, and wrongful detention, despite having obtained parental consent for their journey.

“What happened to us in Durg was terrifying,” said Lalita Hussain, one of the survivors, speaking outside the courthouse where they have filed a complaint. “We are here to file a case against what Jyoti Sharma did to us. She treated us in a way no woman should treat another human being.”

According to the girls, Jyoti Sharma took them to police station from the railway station. What followed, they allege, was a traumatic episode involving a hostile crowd of around 100 to 150 people. “They were pushing and pulling us, groping us,” they said. “They were shouting that they would rape us, force us to sleep with men. We were terrified.”

The girls claim that Jyoti Sharma herself made several of these threats, while physically assaulting them during the ordeal. “She kept slapping us again and again. When someone tried to record it on video, she ordered them to stop filming. Then later, she told the media she was trying to protect us—as if we were the ones in danger.”

Despite the fact that the girls had proper permission from their parents to travel, Sharma allegedly treated them as if they were being trafficked. “We were innocent,” said another girl. “We took permission from our parents. Still, she threw us into jail. We didn’t feel safe—not for a moment.”

They added that the two ASMI sisters and a young man, who were falsely accused of human trafficking, have since been released on bail. “We are happy the innocent are out of jail. But we want a full investigation into Jyoti Sharma and her intentions. Why did she do this to us? What was she trying to prove?”

The girls also raised broader questions about the double standards applied to tribal youth. “We came from Narayanpur with permission, yet were treated like criminals,” they said. “But there are many people who come to Narayanpur from outside for work without any questions. Why is it a crime when we try to build our lives in other cities?”

As the case unfolds, the focus now shifts to whether the authorities will initiate a thorough and impartial investigation into the actions of Jyoti Sharma and those involved in the public harassment and abuse.
