First Claretian Priest from Zou Community is Ordained

Manipur, January 11, 2026: The Zou Catholic community in Manipur marked a historic moment with the ordination of its first priest from the Claretian Congregation. Fr. Marcus Thangminlun, CMF, from Assumption Parish, Kholian, was ordained on 6 January 2026 at his home parish, ending more than seven decades without a Claretian priest from the community.

Archbishop Linus Neli, Archbishop of Imphal, conferred the ordination during a solemn Eucharistic celebration concelebrated by 38 priests from religious congregations and the diocesan clergy. Thousands of faithful attended the ceremony, reflecting the significance of the occasion for the local Church.

Several Church leaders and clergy were present, including Fr. Joseph Mappila, Provincial Superior of the Northeast Claretian Province, along with religious sisters, community leaders and members of Catholic organisations. Christians from other denominations also joined the celebration.

In his homily, Archbishop Neli described the ordination as an encouraging sign for the Church in the region. He highlighted the importance of long priestly formation and reminded the faithful that priests are called to proclaim the Word of God, celebrate the sacraments and serve God’s people with humility and obedience.

The Zou community has played a significant role in the growth of Catholicism in Manipur. With the ordination of Fr. Marcus Thangminlun, the total number of Zou priests has reached eight, following the death of one priest in 2024.

The Claretian Congregation began its mission in Manipur in 1987 and returned to the state in 2023 after a long absence. It is currently serving in three missions in the region. Founded in 1870 by St Anthony Mary Claret in Spain, the Congregation is present in 73 countries worldwide.

The ordination of Fr. Marcus Thangminlun is being seen as a milestone for the Zou Catholic community and a sign of renewed hope for the Church in Manipur.
