Prayagraj, February 3, 2025: Nazareth Hospital in Prayagraj organised a heartfelt 'Bandara' (free food initiative) during the Maha Kumbh Mela, offering tea, snacks, and meals to around 30,000 pilgrims on January 29, 2025. This gesture, undertaken by the Diocesan Commission for dialogue with other religions, was a profound display of respect and solidarity with the Hindu brethren, embodying the values of compassion and unity.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, held from January 13 to February 26, 2025, is the world’s largest religious gathering, attracting millions of devotees to the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj. On January 29, Mauni Amavasya—a day considered particularly auspicious—saw an overwhelming influx of pilgrims, many of whom had journeyed barefoot for 25 to 30 kilometers, arriving hungry and weary.
Understanding the needs of these devotees, the staff of Nazareth Hospital came together to provide nourishment and support. The experience of serving the pilgrims was deeply moving, as the hospital staff sensed the divine presence in their faces and felt a profound satisfaction in providing comfort. The initiative was met with heartfelt appreciation, particularly from the Hindu pilgrims, who expressed gratitude for the love, compassion, and solidarity that defined this service.
This Bandara not only addressed the immediate needs of the pilgrims but also reinforced the spirit of communal harmony. Looking ahead, the doctors, nurses, and domestic staff of Nazareth Hospital are already preparing for another Bandara by contributing their time, resources, and efforts to ensure that the needs of the pilgrims are met.
This initiative was a powerful reminder of the importance of interfaith dialogue and collaboration, showing that acts of kindness transcend religious lines and strengthen the bonds of unity in a diverse society.
