Cloudburst in Uttarkashi Triggers Flash Flood Leaving Four Dead and Several Missing

Dharali, August 5, 2025 – At least four people have lost their lives and several others are feared missing after a powerful flash flood, triggered by a cloudburst in the upper catchment of the Kheer Ganga river, wreaked havoc in Dharali village, located in Uttarkashi district on Tuesday.

Uttarkashi District Magistrate Prashant Arya confirmed the fatalities, stating, “A massive wave of flash flood hit the area. We are currently assessing the extent of damage to life and property.”

He further informed that personnel from the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed to the affected region to conduct search and rescue operations.

Shocking visuals showed the brutal force of the floodwaters as they tore through Dharali village, demolishing homes, shops, and roads, and leaving behind a trail of rubble and mud. Early reports indicate that several hotels and homestays have been completely destroyed in the deluge.

Local residents fear that around 10 to 12 labourers could be trapped beneath the debris.

Meanwhile, in the Banala Patti area of Barkot tehsil, nearly 18 goats were swept away by the surging Kud Gadhera stream.

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for continued heavy rainfall across Uttarakhand until 10 August, particularly in the hilly regions where intense downpours are anticipated.

Rescue teams have been dispatched from Harsil and Bhatwari, and operations are underway to locate and evacuate those who may still be trapped.
