Christian, Minority Groups Protest in Vijayapura, Karnataka Against Injustice and Rights Violations

Vijayapura, Karnataka, August 5, 2025 – Over 200 members of the Christian community, minority groups, and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) gathered in a peaceful protest on 4 August 2025, voicing strong opposition to the recent violence against religious Sisters in Chhattisgarh and the rising wave of systematic attacks on minority communities across India.

The demonstration began at Ambedkar Chowk, moved through Gandhi Chowk, and culminated at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, where a formal memorandum was submitted. Participants – including priests, religious Sisters, SHG members, and local leaders – marched with placards and slogans, expressing deep concern over the undermining of fundamental rights, particularly the freedom of religion.

Fr. Sunil Fernandes SJ, Mission Superior, delivered the keynote address, firmly condemning the attacks on the Sisters and urging civil authorities to uphold constitutional values. His passionate message called for unity and resistance in the face of injustice, drawing strong support from those gathered.

Also present were Fr. Joseph Vas SJ, Parish Priest of St. Ann Church, Vijayapura, and Fr. Sunil Andrade, along with other Jesuit priests and religious Sisters. Their collective presence lent solidarity and moral strength to the peaceful mobilisation.

Local Slum Samiti leaders played a crucial role in organising the protest and giving voice to the marginalised. Mr. Muttana Bovi, President of the Slum Samiti, addressed the gathering, speaking powerfully about the increasing fear and injustice faced by slum residents and minority groups. He was supported by Ms. Nirmala, a fellow Slum Samiti member, and Mr. Akram, District President of the Samiti, both of whom underscored the urgent need for state accountability and greater protection for vulnerable communities.

The memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner outlined key demands, including justice for the Sisters assaulted in Chhattisgarh, constitutional safeguards for minority communities, prompt action against communal forces, and a recommitment to India’s secular fabric.

The entire event was characterised by a peaceful and dignified atmosphere, underscoring the participants’ unwavering commitment to truth, justice, and democracy. It served as a powerful reminder that, in a democratic nation, the voices of the oppressed and marginalised must be heard and respected.

By standing in solidarity, the Christian community of Vijayapura and fellow citizens sent a clear message: they remain resolute in their pursuit of a just, inclusive, and secular India.
