Catechism Children Lead “My Plant, My Responsibility” Vanamahotsav Celebration in Chicalim, Goa

CHICALIM, July 7, 2025 – As part of the preparation for Vanamahotsov celebration, catechism children of St. Francis Xavier Church, Chicalim, aged between 6 and 15 years, enthusiastically participated in a unique, fun and meaningful activity titled “My Plant… My Responsibility.” The initiative, held from 22 June to 6 July 2025, aimed to cultivate in children a deep-rooted love for nature and care towards the environment, helping them grow into green heroes of the future.

Each child was encouraged to bring an empty flowerpot, soil, and a plant or seed. They were allotted 30 minutes for the planting session, after which the plant was taken home. Over the course of two weeks, the children took ownership of their plants, diligently watering them, observing their growth, naming them—Sunny, Leafy, Buddy, Hope—and ensuring they received enough sunlight and care. This experience turned into a journey of bonding with their green companions.

On 6th July, the occasion of Vanamahotsov, the children joined Fr. Bolmax Pereira, Parish Priest of St. Francis Xavier Church, Chicalim, carrying their potted plants in a procession to begin the Holy Mass, while the choir sang the hymn “All Things Bright and Beautiful.”

Fr. Bolmax blessed the plants, which were then exhibited for the parents. The entire Mass sequence was centred around the theme of Vanamahotsov—the Entrance Hymn, Penitential Prayers, Prayers of the Faithful, and Offertory Prayers. One of the most memorable moments was the sermon delivered by Fr. Bolmax. With passionate energy and a heart full of love for God’s creation, he spoke on the importance of caring for nature and connected faith and ecology. His call to action was simple, clear and touching: Take the first step… plant a tree and watch Jesus’ smile… as you become the Green Guardian.

The children spoke of learning to spend time and enjoy being in nature instead of being on their mobiles. They learnt the values of patience, responsibility, and love towards life—learning to appreciate the beauty of nature as created by God. Students were awarded certificates of being a Green Guardian. For the adults, it was a beautiful reminder that small hands can make a big difference when guided with love and purpose.

The Holy Mass concluded with Fr. Bolmax distributing seeds of Surgam and Onvllam, explaining their medicinal uses and fragrance. He noted that these very flowers, which once adorned our altars and were worn by women, are sadly becoming extinct. Fr. Bolmax encouraged parents and youth to plant these seeds.

A paper-cut tree was prepared, where children wrote slogans on protecting God’s creation. During the Offertory, this tree was carried by the children and placed in the church.

The children’s choir sang the recessional hymn “God Still Loves the World.” The celebration came to a meaningful end, fostering environmental awareness and everyone taking responsibility to continue this mission, not just today, but every day.
