Shillong, India, March 31, 2025 - Archbishop Victor Lyngdoh of the Shillong Archdiocese ordained Fr. Bernard Laloo as the new Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese on March 30, 2025. The ordination took place during a Solemn Eucharistic celebration held at Calvary Cathedral, Shillong. The ceremony, which began at 10 AM, was attended by numerous dignitaries, including Apostolic Nuncio Leopoldo Girelli, three regional archbishops, thirteen current bishops from the region, three auxiliary bishops, two emeriti bishops, and an assembly of priests. Bishop Bernard Laloo, the youngest bishop to be ordained in the region, embarks on his role as a beacon of hope for the people.
Youngest Bishop in the Region
Bishop Laloo’s appointment marks a significant moment, as he is the youngest priest to be ordained as a bishop in the region, a position previously held by Nongstoin Bishop Wilbert Marwein.
Auxiliary Bishop of Tura, Jose Chirackal, noted this on the sidelines of the event, emphasising the significance of a youth-led perspective in church leadership.
Among the distinguished guests at the ordination were Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Kongkal Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, and MLA Vincent Pala, who joined over 150,000 faithful gathered around the cathedral. The celebration was telecasted on ten giant screens for those unable to enter the packed venue.
Fr Richard Majaw, one of the two Episcopal Vicars, welcomed attendees before the Mass, setting a positive tone for the day. The Apostolic Nuncio delivered the Holy See Mandate in traditional Latin, which was then translated into Khasi by Fr. Majaw.
Archbishop’s Homily
In his homily, Archbishop Victor Lyngdoh emphasised, “Today we rejoice because we have a new shepherd, Auxiliary Bishop Bernard Laloo.” He drew parallels between the scriptural readings and the bishop's responsibilities, likening Laloo to Joshua, who led and guided the Israelites to the Promised Land. The archbishop also urged the congregation to remain faithful, reiterating the importance of trust in God's power and the need for reconciliation during the Lenten season.
He addressed Bishop Laloo directly, declaring, “God has chosen you to be the shepherd of the Archdiocese of Shillong. Therefore, be like Joshua—to lead, protect, and guide your people.” The archbishop's heartfelt call for Bishop Laloo to act with humility and compassion resonated deeply with the assembly.
Nuncio’s Message
Apostolic Nuncio Leopoldo Girelli also shared his joy during the post-communion address, offering warm wishes to the newly ordained bishop. He thanked Archbishop Victor on behalf of the Holy Father for his dedicated service and spoke fondly of the late Archbishop Dominic Jala, acknowledging his nearly two decades of contributions to the Church. The Nuncio encouraged Bishop Laloo, stating, “May the Blessed Virgin Mary intercede for you, and may St. Joseph inspire you as you work for the growth of God’s kingdom.”
Referring to Bishop Laloo’s episcopal motto, “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength” (Isaiah 40:31), the Nuncio highlighted the importance of trust in God during this Jubilee year of hope. The Nuncio pointed out the numerous strengths of the Archdiocese, including vibrant youth associations, while also reminding the new bishop of the challenges that lie ahead in building the Kingdom of God.
The offertory was a particularly touching moment, featuring traditional dances performed by children in Khasi and Garo attire, capturing the hearts of all present and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region.
In his thanksgiving address, Bishop Laloo expressed profound gratitude to God for his life and the priesthood, saying, “The Lord has done great things for me, and holy is his name.” He acknowledged the trust placed in him by Pope Francis and thanked Archbishop John Moolachira and Vice President Archbishop Linus Neill for their support.
Before the day’s celebration, Archbishop Victor reflected on God’s grace in his life, sharing, “I have no degrees, no ability, but God’s grace is immense.” His humility and deep connection to faith serve as inspirations to the community.
As Northeast India embraces this new leadership, hopes are high for Bishop Laloo’s commitment to fostering a nurturing and united community under his guidance.
