Assam Floods: Dibrugarh Cathedral Waterlogged, Thousands Affected

Dibrugarh, July 2, 2024: Flood situation turns catastrophic in Assam, northeast India, as over 700,000 people are affected across 20 districts, with the Brahmaputra River bursting its highest flood level and eight others overflowing dangerously, causing severe waterlogging that has forced the temporary closure of the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Dibrugarh diocese.

In an exclusive interview with Most Rev. Albert Hemrom, Bishop of the Dibrugarh Diocese, discussed the recent severe flooding caused by nearly a week of continuous heavy rainfall. The flooding has significantly affected the Dibrugarh city including the bishop’s residence, which is currently submerged in water up to a foot deep. Nearby institutions and convents have also been impacted. The city was not prepared for it, as there had been no significant floods in the last 5 to 6 years.

Bishop Hemrom detailed the measures taken by authorities, including the deployment of large pumps to remove the accumulated water. He expressed hope that the water levels would soon decrease, although the river levels remain dangerously high. Fortunately, the Cathedral and the parish house have not been infiltrated by floodwaters yet.

To aid those in need, the Diocese's social wing has been distributing rations across affected areas. Among the regions under the Diocese, Dibrugarh is the most severely affected. The Bishop's residence has been partially evacuated, with all offices moved from the ground floor, now completely flooded , to the first floor where operations are being managed.

The Dibrugarh government has ordered the closure of all schools, colleges and institutions as a precautionary measure. The Bishop also urged everyone to pray for the community, hoping that everything will return to normal soon.
