Archdiocese of Goa and Daman Celebrates Jubilee of Workers on Workers’ Day

Goa, 1 May, 2025: In a meaningful recognition to the dedicated service of church workers, the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, through Caritas-Goa, in collaboration with the Workers India Federation (Goa) and Pravasi Bandhu Projects, celebrated the Jubilee of Workers on 1st May — International Workers’ Day — at the Navelim Parish Hall.

The event brought together church employees from the deaneries of Benaulim, Margao, Chinchinim, and Raia. Attendees included office staff, gardeners, caretakers, cooks, sacristans, and grave diggers — all integral members of parish life.

The programme commenced with a prayer led by Mackley Aguiar, setting a reflective tone for the gathering. Fr. Maverick Fernandes, Director of Caritas-Goa, warmly welcomed the participants and acknowledged their tireless service. Debbie Fernandes, Vice President of the Workers India Federation (Goa), introduced the federation.

Antonio Costa, President of Workers India Federation, delivered an inspiring address, outlining the objectives of the Workers India Federation. This was followed by Feliza Goes, Co-ordinator of Pravasi Bandhu, who provided valuable information on various government schemes such as Deen Dayal, E-Shram, Ayushman Bharat, and PM-JAY.

A key highlight of the celebration involved dividing attendees into trade-based groups, enabling them to share personal experiences and foster a sense of solidarity. Following the small group discussions, representatives from each trade group presented their insights to the larger assembly. Icebreakers and interactive games further enhanced the spirit of community and celebration.

Vote of thanks was delivered by Fr. Savio Fernandes, Executive Secretary of the Council for Social Justice and Peace, where he expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the Jubilee celebration.
