Archbishop Most Rev. Dr. George Antonysamy: A Life Dedicated to Faith and Service

Chennai, February 15, 2025: The Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore united to celebrate the birthday of Most Rev. Dr. George Antonysamy, Archbishop of the historic Metropolitan Archdiocese, on February 15. A solemn Holy Mass at St. Thomas Cathedral Basilica’s Tomb Chapel saw priests from across the Archdiocese join in prayer.


A visionary leader and dedicated servant of God, Archbishop Antonysamy has tirelessly worked for the spiritual, pastoral, and social upliftment of the faithful globally. 


A Legacy of Leadership and Service 

Born on February 15, 1952, Archbishop George Antonysamy has dedicated his life to the Church. In 1987, he joined the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See, embarking on a global mission across Indonesia, North Africa, Central Africa, South Asia, and the Baltics. From 1998 to 2002, he served as Vicar General of the Apostolic Administration of Estonia, guiding the faithful in the Baltic region. His leadership was further recognized in 2002 when he was appointed Chargé d’Affaires of the Apostolic Nunciature in Jordan. 


Episcopal Service and Global Mission 

On August 4, 2005, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Titular Archbishop of Sulci, Italy. His episcopal ordination took place on September 21, 2005, at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Tiruchirapalli, embracing the motto "Under Your Patronage." As Apostolic Nuncio, he served in Gambia, Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone, also acting as Pastoral Administrator of Monrovia (2006–2009). His service strengthened the Church’s presence in Africa, fostering unity and pastoral care. 


Leadership in the Indian Church

Since his appointment as the 6th Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore, Archbishop George Antonysamy has tirelessly enriched the spiritual and social well-being of the faithful. His influence extends beyond the Archdiocese, serving as Director of TNBC, Vice President-I of CBCI, former CCBI Vice President, and a member of the Vatican Dicastery. 

Under his leadership, the Archdiocese of Madras - Mylapore has seen remarkable growth in faith-based initiatives, social service programs, and community development efforts.


Major Initiatives under His Leadership

Under his leadership, the Archdiocese hosted two major congresses: the Eucharistic Congress (2018–19), deepening devotion to the Holy Eucharist, and the Marian Congress (2023), strengthening Marian devotion. His tenure has also expanded pastoral programs, youth initiatives, and educational missions, uplifting the underprivileged.

Archbishop George Antonysamy’s unwavering dedication to pastoral care has strengthened the clergy, religious, and laity. His focus on priestly formation and leadership training has empowered many young religious, while his commitment to social outreach has brought hope to the marginalized. His leadership continues to uphold the Church’s mission of service and compassion.
