Archbishop Gallagher Emphasises Faith, Dialogue, and Diplomacy in Meeting with Dr. S Jaishankar

17 July 2025 : Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations of the Holy See, met recently with Dr. S Jaishankar, the External Affairs minister of India and his team for a conversation focused on the role of faith and the pressing need for dialogue and diplomacy in addressing today’s global conflicts.

The meeting was described as warm and constructive, with both sides underscoring the significance of faith as a unifying force in an increasingly divided world. Archbishop Gallagher, the Vatican’s top diplomat, shared insights on how the Church’s commitment to peace, human dignity, and the common good continues to shape its international engagement.

During the conversation, the Archbishop stressed that diplomacy and open dialogue are essential tools in resolving disputes and building lasting peace. He noted that in many areas of the world facing crisis, the absence of honest communication and mutual understanding only deepens divisions and suffering.

The discussion highlighted the Church’s longstanding mission to serve as a bridge in areas of conflict—whether through humanitarian assistance, interfaith cooperation, or behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts. Archbishop Gallagher reaffirmed the Vatican’s readiness to work with international organisations and states to foster reconciliation, particularly in regions where violence and injustice persist.

Faith, the Archbishop noted, plays a pivotal role in healing societies and restoring hope. He pointed out that spiritual values—such as compassion, forgiveness, and solidarity—must guide both national and international efforts to address the root causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, and exclusion.

The meeting concluded with mutual recognition of the need for continued engagement between religious and political institutions. Both parties expressed hope that such encounters would contribute to greater cooperation and more effective responses to the challenges facing humanity today.

Archbishop Gallagher’s role as Secretary for Relations with States places him at the heart of the Holy See’s global diplomatic efforts. His work involves representing the Vatican in multilateral forums and fostering bilateral relations, often focusing on peacebuilding, human rights, and religious freedom.

This latest meeting serves as another reminder of the Vatican’s active commitment to promoting dialogue and diplomacy as essential pathways toward a more just and peaceful world.
