Agartala Christians Condemn Unjust Arrest of Two Nuns in Chhattisgarh

Agartala, Tripura, August 2, 2025: The Diocese of Agartala and the United Christian Forum of Agartala strongly condemn the recent unjust arrest and detention of two Catholic nuns, Vandana Francis and Preeti Mary, along with Mr. Sukuman Mandavi, an indigenous youth who accompanied the three women during their journey in Chhattisgarh.

This deeply disturbing incident is a blatant violation of their fundamental rights and an affront to the constitutional guarantees of religious freedom and dignity.

According to reports, the two religious women were taken into custody without due process, based on unfounded allegations and under circumstances that clearly reflect harassment and intimidation. Such actions not only traumatise individuals but also send a chilling message to religious minorities across the country.

The Christian community in Agartala, standing in solidarity with the victims and their congregations, calls upon the Chhattisgarh state authorities and the Union Government to immediately:

  • Investigate the incident thoroughly and impartially,
  • Take appropriate legal action against those responsible for the violation of the nuns’ rights,
  • Ensure that such acts of hostility and discrimination are not repeated,
  • Uphold the principles of justice, equality, and religious freedom enshrined in the Indian Constitution.

We reiterate our firm commitment to peace, dialogue, and nation-building, but we cannot remain silent in the face of such injustice. We urge civil society and all people of goodwill to stand united in defending the values that form the bedrock of our democracy.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” — Martin Luther King Jr.

Fr. Joseph Pulinthanath, Spokesperson, Diocese of Agartala &

Fr. Nabin Lakra, Coordinator, United Christian Forum of Agartala
