The ongoing exposition of the sacred relics of St. Francis Xavier serves as a profound reminder of his enduring message of care for all. A contemporary voice echoing these values is Daniel Mascarenhas, S.J., a Jesuit seminarian from Goa, India, currently studying Theology at Boston College School of Theology and Ministry.
Daniel’s journey is one of faith and purpose. Having transitioned from a successful engineering career to the Jesuit order, he embraced a lifestyle guided by reflection and compassion. In 2021, he committed himself to adopt a vegan lifestyle.
In this conversation with Catholic Connect, Daniel shares his thoughts on his journey to priesthood and becoming vegan over a period of time.
Can you share your journey from Goa to becoming a Jesuit seminarian?
I grew up in a Goan family in Kuwait, and due to the Gulf War in 1990, we moved back to Goa. I completed my schooling at Loyola High School, Margao, followed by higher studies at Chowgule College and BITS Pilani (Goa campus), where I studied mechanical engineering.
My professional journey began in the U.S., where I pursued a master's degree at the University of Minnesota and worked as a design engineer in Silicon Valley. Living near a Jesuit university in California introduced me to the Jesuits and their spiritual life, which resonated deeply with me. In 2016, I entered the Jesuit congregation, marking a new chapter of discernment and faith.
What experiences shaped your perspective on showing care towards animals?
My understanding of care deepened during my theological studies. As I reflected on the problem of suffering and the interconnectedness of all creation, I began to see how humanity’s choices impact not only people but all living beings. This realization, nurtured through thoughtful conversations with peers, led me to a renewed commitment to care for creation. Hence, I embraced a lifestyle that seeks to minimize harm to animals.
How do Catholic teachings inspire kind approach for animals?
Catholic teachings emphasize mercy and stewardship for all creation. Pope Francis, in Laudato Si, highlights the interconnectedness of all living beings and calls for a consistent ethic of care.
What challenges do you encounter while encouraging a mindful approach toward animals?
The challenge lies in creating awareness in a way that aligns with faith and respects individual choices. Rather than imposing views, I aim to inspire dialogue.
Are you attending the exposition of St. Francis Xavier this year?
I won’t be able to attend due to commitments abroad, but I hold fond memories of past expositions in Goa, especially attending Mass at the Basilica of Bom Jesus, where the relics of St. Francis Xavier are kept. These moments remain deeply meaningful to me.
How do you plan to promote awareness about your vegan lifestyle?
I run a website, Vegan Catholic, and share resources on social media to inspire conversations about care for animals. Through writing, videos and classroom discussions, I hope to encourage reflection on how faith can guide our actions toward greater love and mercy.
