The Jubilee Year of Hope 2025, which commenced on Christmas Eve, is a period of spiritual renewal for members of the Catholic Church. Millions of Catholics from across the globe will be making their pilgrimage to Rome during this Holy Year. However, many Catholics may be unable to journey to the Eternal City during the Jubilee Year. For such individuals, here are a few ways to celebrate this sacred year right within your diocese:
Reconciliation: Rooted in the ancient Israelite tradition of jubilee, this Holy Year emphasizes forgiveness and reconciliation. Pope Francis has called the sacrament of reconciliation "the essential starting point of any true journey of conversion." Avail of the sacrament of reconciliation during this Jubilee Year. Local dioceses will offer several opportunities for the faithful to make their confession during this sacred period.
Read the Jubilee Document: Dive into Spes Non Confundit, the papal bull that outlines the Jubilee Year’s theme of "Pilgrims of Hope." In this holy document, Pope Francis reflects on hope, patience, and the significance of a jubilee. He also urges Christians to embrace mercy and charity during this sacred season.
Perform Works of Mercy: Pope Francis has urged the faithful to bring hope to those facing hardships during this Jubilee Year. He specifically mentions individuals such as prisoners, the sick, the young, migrants, the elderly, and the poor.
During this Holy Year, increase your exercise of the corporal works of mercy — feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, visiting the imprisoned, and burying the dead.
Make a Local Pilgrimage: While pilgrimages during a Jubilee Year are usually made to Rome, those unable to travel to the Eternal City can make a pilgrimage to holy sites located in one’s diocese. Many dioceses in India have designated specific parishes and sacred places as sites for pilgrimage during the Jubilee Year.
Making a pilgrimage to one of these holy sites offers the faithful an opportunity to receive the Jubilee Indulgence, a grace that remits the temporal punishments of sin.
Pray the Jubilee Prayer: Incorporate the official Jubilee prayer into your daily prayer routine. With lines like “May the grace of the Jubilee reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope, a yearning for the treasures of heaven,” it is a simple yet profound way to connect with the spirit of the Jubilee Year.
Embrace and Practice Hope: Above all, the Jubilee is a time to deepen your hope through prayer, the sacraments, and virtuous living. Pope Francis reminds us that hope dwells in every heart and is rooted in Christ, the "door" of our salvation. Celebrate this Holy Year by fostering a personal encounter with the Lord, wherever you may be.
