Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council Calls for Unity Amid Rising Social Tensions

Tamil Nadu, December 7, 2025: Tamil Nadu Catholic Bishops’ Council has issued a strong appeal urging people across the State to uphold peace, unity, and social harmony amid what it describes as emerging trends that threaten the region’s longstanding culture of coexistence.

In its statement, the Council emphasises that India is a nation enriched by diversity, and Tamil Nadu stands out as a State long recognised for peace and communal harmony. It highlights that Tamil Nadu has made significant progress in education, employment, healthcare, infrastructure, and overall development—achievements made possible through the dedication of its people, visionary leadership, and a deeply rooted spirit of unity.

The Council notes that this growth has flourished because the people of Tamil Nadu consistently rise above caste, religious, ethnic, and linguistic differences. It stresses that the State’s commitment to equality, fraternity, and social cohesion has been central to its development.

However, the statement raises concern over recent developments that, according to the Council, threaten the peace and unity the State has carefully nurtured. These unsettling trends, it says, have caused “deep concern and sadness” among those who value Tamil Nadu’s social wellbeing.

Affirming that peace and justice form the bedrock of human development and economic progress, the Council urges communities to work together “as a mature society” to protect and reinforce harmony. It cautions against actions driven by political interests that may endanger social stability and calls on residents to continue fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect and collective growth.

The Council underscores the need for the people of Tamil Nadu to transcend all forms of division and to embrace their shared identity as members of one community striving for peace. It asserts that unity in both thought and action is essential to keep the State from falling prey to divisive or anti-social forces.

In a clear call to action, the Bishops’ Council invites all people of goodwill to join hands in safeguarding Tamil Nadu’s social fabric. It urges citizens to recognise and counter any effort to create rifts along caste or religious lines, reaffirming the collective desire for lasting peace and harmony.

Concluding its message, the Tamil Nadu Catholic Bishops’ Council expresses its hope that unity will prevail and prays for God’s blessings of enduring peace, mutual respect, and brotherhood upon the State.
