Priest Stabbed During Mass in Singapore

Singapore, November 11, 2024: Father Christopher Lee, the parish priest of St. Joseph’s Church in Upper Bukit Timah, Singapore, was stabbed during the Saturday evening Mass on November 9. The 57 year old priest was attacked while distributing Communion. Father Lee was rushed to Singapore's National University Hospital, where he remains in stable condition. The assailant, a 37 year old Singaporean, was subdued by congregation members before being taken into custody by the Singapore Police Force, who reported that the individual has a history of serious offenses and drug misuse.

The Singapore Police Force confirmed that preliminary investigations suggest the assailant acted alone and clarified that, as of now, there is no indication of terrorist motives. They urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation while the investigation continues to determine the exact motive behind the attack.

In response, Cardinal William Goh, the head of the Catholic Church in Singapore, expressed profound sorrow over the incident, describing the attack as a shocking violation of the sanctity of a place of worship. He voiced concern about the psychological impact on the parishioners, especially children, who witnessed the violent incident. Cardinal Goh called on the faithful to refrain from speculating and to trust the authorities to handle the matter.

Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong also condemned the attack, emphasizing that "violence has no place in Singapore." He expressed his hope for healing among parishioners affected by the traumatic event and underscored the importance of upholding the safety and sanctity of places of worship.
