Pope: "Priests Must Offer Hope to The Brokenhearted"

Vatican City, January 30, 2025: Pope Francis met with seminarians, formators, and bishops from the Archdiocese of Valencia and a few other Spanish dioceses during an audience in the Vatican on Thursday. The meeting came three months after devastating floods hit the Spanish city of Valencia, killing approximately 230 people and displacing thousands. During the meeting, the pontiff called on future priests to be deeply shaped by the suffering of those they serve.

In his address, Pope Francis emphasized the role of priests in healing broken hearts and guiding individuals through times of despair. He also reminded seminarians that the vocation of a priest goes beyond mere optimism, which he described as “a superficial attitude.” Instead, he urged them to embody hope, which he defined as a profound connection to Jesus Christ.

"Our hope has a name—Jesus—God, who was not disgusted by our clay and who, instead of saving us from the clay, became clay for us," Pope Francis explained. “Each priest is called to become an alter Christus—another Christ—by becoming ‘clay in the weeping of the people,’” he added.

Pope Francis also expressed his deep empathy for the people of Valencia, who faced the tragedy of losing loved ones and homes during the floods. He acknowledged the difficulty of fully expressing his emotions but pointed to the collective mourning as a pathway to hope. “Yours is a pain and mourning that, despite its harshness, opens us to hope,” he said. “In forcing us to reach rock bottom and leave behind everything that seemed to sustain us, it allows us to go beyond.”

The Pope encouraged seminarians to play an active role in offering hope to people who are broken by offering pieces of themselves, just as Christ offers Himself in the Eucharist. "When you see broken people, give them pieces, fragments, of yourselves, just as Christ does in the Eucharist," he said. Pope Francis concluded his address by reminding future priests of their mission to give of themselves freely, just as they have received freely.

The Pope’s message of compassion and self-giving resonates deeply with the teachings of Christ, reinforcing the role of priests as compassionate healers and spiritual guides in times of hardship.
