Pope Francis Urges Reflection and Action for Peace in New Year's Angelus

Vatican City, January 1, 2024—Pope Francis, during his Angelus address on New Year’s Day, called for safeguarding life and fostering peace through the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Addressing a packed Saint Peter's Square after presiding over the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, the Holy Father urged believers to embrace the joy of the Gospel and carry its message into the world.

Reflecting on the Gospel account of the shepherds visiting the newborn Jesus in Bethlehem, Pope Francis highlighted the "surprise and joy of Christmas." He emphasized how this encounter inspires wonder and how Mary, the Mother of God, preserved these moments in her heart, embodying hope and redemption.

“Jesus, whose name means ‘God saves,’ reveals the eternal love that brings peace into the world,” Pope Francis affirmed. He explained that Mary's heart resonates with the mercy of the Father, symbolizing the hope for salvation for all.

In his address, the Pope also acknowledged the unique role of mothers, celebrating their joys and sharing their sorrows, especially those who endure the pain of losing children to violence and war. He lamented the inhumanity of conflict, contrasting it with the beauty of peace.

In his concluding remarks, Pope Francis invited the faithful to introspect on their capacity for silence, forgiveness, and reconciliation. He urged believers to imitate Mary by cherishing the Gospel's message and demonstrating it through actions that promote peace.

“May Mary, the Holy Mother of God, teach us to keep the joy of the Gospel in our hearts and bear witness to it in the world,” the Pope prayed.
