Pope Commends Italian Soldiers for Aiding in Humanitarian Emergencies

Vatican City, November 9, 2024: Pope Francis met with officers and soldiers from the Italian Army’s Transport and Material Corps in the Vatican’s Clementine Hall on November 7, thanking them for their dedicated humanitarian efforts during crises. Addressing some 400 members of the corps, the Pope highlighted their work in natural disasters, health crises and peacekeeping missions, commending their courage and commitment to service. The meeting marked the 70th anniversary of Saint Christopher’s proclamation as the patron saint of the corps.

Pope Francis praised the soldiers for choosing Saint Christopher, a martyr known for embodying courage and service, as their patron, underscoring the importance of strong ethical and spiritual values in their demanding profession. He encouraged them to view their patron as a reminder of their commitment to human dignity and service, especially in times of peace, disasters and public health emergencies.

Reflecting on the soldiers’ contributions, the Pope commended their work in past emergencies, such as earthquakes, floods and the COVID-19 pandemic, where they provided logistical support, established vital infrastructure and distributed resources like vaccines. He also recognized their role in international peacekeeping, transporting materials for both military and humanitarian purposes. Their actions, Pope Francis said, reflect a life committed to the “common good,” where they often risk personal safety to protect and support others.

Pope Francis concluded by invoking Saint Christopher’s blessing upon the corps, praying for God’s protection and guidance as they continue their noble mission. He praised their dedication to service, which, as he noted, frequently extends into volunteer work even after active duty, embodying a lifelong devotion to aiding those in need.
