From Migrant Advocate to Cardinal: CCBI Commission Hails Fr Fabio Baggio's Appointment

New Delhi, October 7, 2024: In a historic move, Pope Francis has appointed Fr. Fabio Baggio, a champion of migrant rights, as Cardinal. 


The Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) Commission for Migrants has hailed the appointment, recognizing Fr. Baggio's tireless advocacy for marginalized communities.


"Fr. Baggio's appointment as Cardinal is a testament to his unwavering commitment to the most vulnerable," said Fr. Jaison Vadassery, Executive Secretary of the CCBI Commission for Migrants. "His leadership has inspired us to foster greater compassion, justice, and solidarity."


Fr. Baggio has worked closely with the CCBI Commission for Migrants, visiting Myanmar refugee communities in Delhi in 2023. 


 He had also participated in the Bangalore Meet of regional secretaries of the Commission in 2023 in which he shared his expertise with Regional Secretaries.


Monsignor Fabio Baggio spearheaded the groundbreaking Historical Exodus Programme in Manila, Philippines which focused on safely repatriating and rehabilitating migrants.


Msgr. Baggio's keynote address during the National Meet in Bangalore emphasized respecting migrants' dignity and rights, regardless of status or background. His advocacy for compassionate policies underscored the Church's moral responsibility toward the displaced.


As Cardinal, Fr. Baggio is expected to continue advancing the Church's global mission of advocating for migrants' and refugees' rights, dignity, and well-being.


The CCBI has expressed gratitude to Pope Francis for promoting leaders who embody mercy, justice, and service to the vulnerable.
