Catholic Leaders Forge Path for Political Action and Community Impact

Bangalore, September 26, 2024: The Karnataka Catholic Think Tank, a collective of Catholic professionals from various sectors, convened at Subodhana on September 25 for a strategic meeting to address key socio-political and economic challenges in the region. The gathering brought together Church leaders and experts who discussed the future of Catholic engagement in Karnataka, particularly focusing on political participation and societal impact.


The meeting commenced with an address by Prof. Babu Mathew, who praised Archbishop Peter Machado of Bangalore for his leadership and lauded Clara Fernandes for her service. Prof. Mathew emphasized the critical role of the Think Tank in engaging key voter groups and identifying constituencies where Catholics could influence political outcomes, particularly through the Eddelu Karnataka campaign. He encouraged a proactive approach, stressing that while Catholics form a small minority, they have the potential to make a significant impact.


Following this, the Secretary presented the annual report, and representatives from various professional groups- lawyers, bureaucrats, doctors, educators and others provided updates on their contributions to the Church’s mission in Karnataka. Bishop Francis Serrao of Shimoga delivered the keynote address, commending the Think Tank’s support and cautioning against complacency. He urged vigilance in defending fundamental rights and fostering awareness of societal issues.


Archbishop Machado remarked “We must do three things: recognize excellence, put it into practice, and address the negatives” outlining the Think Tank’s objectives including spiritual empowerment, economic and educational advancement and interreligious dialogue. He stressed the importance of strategic planning and collaboration between lay professionals and Church leaders.


The meeting concluded with the election of new office bearers, with Mr. Roy Castelino elected as President, Mr. Jacob Crasta and Mr. Antony Mendonsa as Vice Presidents, Mrs. Clara Fernandes, the Regional Secretary for Laity, also appointed as the Secretary of the Think Tank and Nirmala appointed as Joint Secretary. The Karnataka Catholic Think Tank remains committed to providing expert guidance to the Church and addressing the challenges facing society.
