Catholic Council of India Stresses on Laity’s Role in Nation-Building

Pala, Kerala, November 16, 2024: The Catholic Council of India (CCI) held its 15th Governing Body Meeting on November 15, centered on the theme “The Vital Role of Laity in the Socio-Political Context of India.” Attended by bishops, clergy, religious, laity and dignitaries, the gathering emphasized Synodality, unity and the laity's mission in addressing India’s contemporary challenges.

The meeting commenced with a Eucharistic Celebration led by Cardinal Oswald Gracias, who highlighted the gathering as a model of Synodality. In his homily, Cardinal Gracias urged the Church to embody communion, participation and mission, reflecting on the Gospel’s call to abide in Christ. He emphasized the laity’s transformative role in society, stating, “The Holy Father, in the recent Synod, emphasized the importance of the laity within and outside the Church. They are called to imbue the world with the Spirit of the Gospel. Jesus came to transform the world, and Synodality must influence areas such as political life, ensuring everyone progresses together.”

Cardinal Gracias outlined four key dimension for the Church in India: being faith-filled, participatory, relevant and inclusive. He likened the work of the participants to a "web of connections" addressing the needs of the Church and the world.

Archbishop Andrews Thazhath, President of CCI, echoed the Second Vatican Council’s vision of co-responsibility, calling on all baptized members to collaborate in fulfilling Christ’s mission. He stressed the Church’s duty to uphold the Constitution, protect minority rights, and safeguard religious freedom, particularly in the face of challenges like Dalit Christian marginalization and Christian persecution.

Minister George Kurian encouraged the Church’s active engagement in nation-building while preserving constitutional values. Archbishop Peter Machado called for firm advocacy for human rights and religious freedom, proposing the replication of the CCI’s Synodal model at the state level.

A detailed report by Rev. Fr. A. E. Raju Alex, Secretary of CCI, highlighted the Council’s initiatives in fostering unity, engaging the laity and addressing socio-political issues. Felicitations were delivered by Rev. Sr. Elsa Muttathu PBVM and Chevalier V.C. Sebastian, among others, while Treasurer P. K. Cherian acknowledged sponsors and contributors.

The meeting underscored the Catholic Church in India’s dedication to unity, mission and socio-political engagement.
