Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati: The Man of the Beatitudes

Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, often called the “Man of the Beatitudes,” remains a powerful model for Catholic youth with his dynamic balance of social life, service to the poor, and deep faith. Born on 6 April 1901 in Turin, Italy, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 20 May 1990, who hailed him as a “man of the eight Beatitudes.”

Though he enjoyed mountain climbing, skiing, theatre, and spending time with friends, Pier Giorgio’s devotion to Christ guided his everyday choices. A committed member of Catholic Action, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and the Third Order Dominicans, he dedicated himself to prayer, charity, and justice. He combined a lively social spirit with an unwavering commitment to the poor, often giving away his money, possessions, and even his train tickets to those in need.

Pier Giorgio’s life was tragically cut short when he died of polio at just 24, a disease he contracted after serving the sick and poor. His funeral in Turin drew thousands of ordinary people—many of them poor—who revealed the hidden extent of his charitable works. Today, his incorrupt body rests in the Cathedral of Turin, drawing pilgrims from around the world.
