Bishop Ambrose Pitchaimuthu Ordained as New Shepherd of Vellore Diocese

Vellore, December 10, 2024: In a grand ceremony held at Don Bosco High School yesterday, Msgr. Ambrose Pitchaimuthu was consecrated as the new Bishop of Vellore, marking a significant milestone for the diocese.


The episcopal ordination, attended by prominent Catholic dignitaries from across India, was led by principal consecrator Archbishop George Antonysamy of Madras-Mylapore. Bishops Neethinathan of Chingleput and Thomas Aquinas of Coimbatore served as co-consecrators.


The ceremony drew together bishops, archbishops, clergy, and faithful from nationwide, welcoming Bishop Pitchaimuthu as the spiritual leader of Vellore Diocese.


The event began with a profound welcome dance, emphasizing dance as a spiritual expression of praising God. Msgr. Dr. I John Robert, the diocesan administrator, delivered the welcome address, highlighting the significance of the occasion. The new bishop was felicitated on behalf of the diocese, with the Vicar General of Vellore garlanding him, and Msgr. Dr. I John Robert presenting the episcopal ring, symbolizing the bishop’s spiritual union with the Church and his role as teacher and protector of the faith.


Felicitation addresses were delivered by Archbishop Emeritus Chinnappa of Madras-Mylapore, Bishop Lawrence Pius of Dharmapuri, and Bishop Neethinathan of Chingleput. During the ordination Mass, Bishop Stephen Antony of Tuticorin preached the homily, inspiring the congregation with reflections on the bishop’s sacred responsibilities.


Apostolic Nunciature representative Fr. Alberto Napolitano read a letter from Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal. The letter conveyed the Holy Father's blessings and emphasized Bishop Ambrose's mission to serve the people of Vellore with dedication and pastoral care.


Following the ordination, Bishop Ambrose personally blessed the congregation, marking a heartfelt moment of connection with the faithful. Expressing his gratitude, he said, “I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the archbishops and bishops who have traveled from various states to attend my ordination and to offer your prayers for me.”


The ceremony was a memorable and spiritually enriching event, signifying the beginning of Bishop Ambrose Pitchaimuthu’s pastoral journey in the Vellore diocese.
