Karwar, July 22, 2025: The Diocesan Liturgical Commission of Karwar, led by Fr. Cyprian Silva, Diocesan Liturgical Director, conducted a spiritually enriching and theologically grounded formation programme for new Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC) on 19 and 20 July 2025. Held at the Diocesan Pastoral Centre in Shirwad, the two-day event drew 75 lay faithful from parishes across the diocese, marking a significant step in strengthening lay involvement in the Church’s liturgical life.
The formation aimed not only to train the participants for the practical aspects of distributing Holy Communion but also to instil in them a profound theological understanding and a deep reverence for the Eucharist. The sessions were designed to help them embrace their role as spiritual witnesses and instruments of service in their respective communities.
Throughout the two days, experienced clergy of the diocese guided the participants through well-structured sessions focused on various aspects of liturgical and sacramental theology.
Fr. Thomas Fernandes, Parish Priest of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Assumption, opened the theological discussions with an in-depth session on the Theology of the Eucharist. He highlighted the Real Presence of Christ and reminded participants that the Eucharist is the source and summit of Christian life. Fr. John Rodrigues, Rector of Holy Cross Seminary in Shirwad, spoke on the Prayer of the Church, focusing on the Liturgy of the Hours and the call for EMHCs to be rooted in a life of prayer.
Offering insights into Sacramental Theology, Fr. Sachin D’Souza, Director of the Family Commission, emphasised the role of sacraments as visible signs of invisible grace and the importance of understanding the sacredness of the Church’s sacramental life. Fr. Gabriel Monis led a session on the spiritual and pastoral disposition required of EMHCs, urging them to approach their ministry not merely as a function but as a profound spiritual service.
The Eucharistic Adoration led by Fr. Wilson D’Souza gave way for a time of deep silence, prayer, and personal encounter with Christ in the Blessed Sacrament deeply touched the participants. Fr. Wilson also guided them through a meaningful Sacrament of Reconciliation, reinforcing the call to interior renewal.
Fr. Cyprian Silva conducted two key sessions on the Church’s teachings and practical spiritual guidance for EMHCs. He explained official Church documents, norms, and expectations, while offering pastoral advice on maintaining humility, reverence, and sensitivity in their ministry.
The high point of the event was the celebration of the Holy Eucharist by His Lordship, Rt. Rev. Dr. Duming Dias, Bishop of Karwar. In his homily, the Bishop reflected on the Gospel passage of Mary and Martha, encouraging the newly trained ministers to choose the better part, like Mary, by remaining rooted in contemplation and the Word of God. He underscored that all ministry must flow from one’s personal relationship with Christ in the Eucharist.
Fr. Cyprian Silva expressed gratitude to the resource persons, diocesan leadership, participants, and support staff. He encouraged the new ministers to live out their calling with faith, fidelity, and fervour.
This formation programme served as a milestone in the Diocese of Karwar’s ongoing efforts to deepen the spiritual life of the laity and ensure that those who serve at the altar do so with both theological understanding and heartfelt devotion.
