Today, March 13, 2025, marks the 12th anniversary of Pope Francis' election as the leader of the Catholic Church. However, this milestone comes amid concerns for his health, as the 87-year-old pontiff is currently receiving treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for respiratory issues. As the world prays for his recovery, it is an opportune moment to reflect on his papacy, highlighting his key achievements, the challenges he faces, and the lasting impact he has had on the Church and global community.

A Papacy of Compassion and Reform

Elected as the 266th pope in 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, Jorge Mario Bergoglio—taking the name Francis—became the first pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit to hold the position. His papacy has been defined by a strong focus on mercy, humility, and advocacy for the marginalised. One of his earliest acts as pope was rejecting the grandeur of the papal palace, choosing to reside instead in the Vatican’s modest Casa Santa Marta. This incredible act of humility set the tone for a pontificate centred on simplicity and accessibility.

Throughout his tenure, Pope Francis has championed social and economic justice. His 2015 encyclical ‘Laudato Si’ called for urgent action against climate change, framing environmental responsibility as a moral imperative. He has also consistently condemned inequality, war, and exploitation, urging world leaders to address the plight of the poor and refugees.

Key Achievements

One of the most significant reforms that Pope Francis has undertaken during his papacy has been his effort to modernise the Church's governance. He overhauled the Vatican’s financial operations to improve transparency and accountability, tackling long-standing corruption issues.

Additionally, he worked toward making the Church more inclusive, particularly through his outreach to the LGBTQ+ community. His famous statement, “Who am I to judge?” in 2013 underscored his inclusive approach to pastoral care.

Francis has also played a pivotal role in promoting interfaith dialogue. His historic meeting with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and his visits to Muslim-majority nations have strengthened efforts toward religious tolerance and unity.

Challenges Faced

However, his papacy has not been without difficulties. He has faced significant pushback from conservative factions within the Church, particularly regarding his progressive stance on issues such as divorced Catholics receiving communion and greater roles for women in Church leadership. The ongoing sexual abuse crisis in the Catholic Church has also been a major challenge for him. While Francis has taken steps to hold perpetrators accountable and support survivors, many critics argue that more decisive actions are needed.

While he has previously stated that resignation is an option if his health severely limits his ability to serve, for now, he remains committed to leading the Church.

His 12 years of leadership have left an indelible mark on the Catholic Church, emphasising compassion, inclusivity, and reform. Irrespective of whether he continues as pope or passes the torch to a successor, his influence will shape the Church for years to come.
